Primary Colours - Pete and Marcia helped us appreciate another culture with drama, video, photos, books and food! We ALL had a great day!!

Dave Wisnia, Head, Fieldhead Carr Primary, Leeds

Primary Colours shows are tailored for pupils across the Primary Range: Early Years to Year Six. We can work with groups of any size, from the whole of a Key Stage to a small Reception class, (the size of your hall is the only limiting factor!) Content and length of performance are adapted to suit each audience.

Primary Colours Shows

Should I stay or should I go ?

Ten year old Sandra has no memories of her mother, Olivia who left her and sister Flo behind in Jamaica with Miss Hope when she sailed to England to make a living. Letters and gifts arrive regularly from 'mother'; then one day, out of the blue, a plane ticket. It's for Sandra; Olivia has finally saved up enough money and wants Miss Hope to send her 'baby' to England.

The Adventures of Ottobah Cugoano

This is an absorbing, astonishing tale of cruelty, adventure and ultimate triumph as Ottobah first endures capture and the long sea journey from Africa to the Caribbean. Pupils witness his sale as a slave and the harshness of his new owner.

Behind Enemy Lines

This is the story of Noor Inayat Khan – writer, musician and secret agent. We journey back in time to see how this brave woman was parachuted into occupied France in order to send back information on the Nazi war plans. We learn of the vital role she played in preparing for the Normandy landings and what happened when she was interrogated as a spy.

C is for Coconut: A Sensory Adventure

Ready Steady Cook meets the Chuckle Brothers. No recipes or 'To me, to you' but it is about food and there is slapstick or what a five year-old might view as ‘sophisticated humour’.

Nice and Hot and Tasty

Everybody eats, and food is an aspect of daily life where all young children first express preferences and make choices. Pupils come face to face with a whole range of Caribbean foods: yams, plantains, coconuts and more. A ‘hamper’ of Caribbean food is supplied to enable immediate follow-up in class (additional hampers can also be purchased).

Olivia's Journey

Olivia's Journey tells the stories of those who travelled from the Caribbean to settle and work in post-War Britain. Your pupils will meet (and even become) some of the characters involved in this exciting, emotional and at times hazardous adventure.

Making Music

You may not be familiar with I Like To Move It. You may not even know it is a song, featured in a film Madagascar. Similarly, your knowledge of the musical works of Bob the Builder may be a little patchy and Mambo Number 5 may have little or no significance in your life.

Rock n Role Play

From Elvis to Eminem, from The Beatles to Mr. Bean, from Madagascar to Muller Light. A singalong, dancalong, actalong, thinkalong show exploring how black music has shaped popular culture in more ways than most people can begin to imagine.

I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know that I had a great day at Pudsey Primrose Hill finding out all about the Primary Colours Project.  I was expecting it to be a straightforward storytelling project but Pete and Rosie really engaged with the children and covered a wide range of subjects including geography, history (social and economic), and music to name but a few. The group seemed really keen and I was sorry I had to leave after the morning session as the afternoon promised to be just as much fun.  The teacher at Primrose Hill is going to meet with me to show me the website and keep me up to date with how the children are developing their sites - and we are hoping to hold an open day/evening in the library where the children can showcase their work to their friends and family. All in all it was a super day

Thankyou for giving us a chance to try out a range of activities for all ages

Sarah Foster, Y2 Teacher, Wilkes Green Infant School

Once again the children had not only thoroughly enjoyed themselves they have also learnt quite a lot too! They’ve explored the origins of many well-known pop tunes, tasted food from around the world and considered important issues such as emigration and acknowledging human dignity. And all in a day! How do you do it?! A big thank you from all of us.

Mark Gillyon (Headteacher) Fairfield Primary School, Grimsby

I like how the autobiographies have been done in a fresh and different way. The interview questions you gave us are brilliant because they really promote speaking and listening. There’s a little boy in my class who is autistic and dual heritage. He couldn’t stop talking about Marcia afterwards.

Year 3 Teacher, Oldham

The attention of the children was captured. It was Important for the children to meet the actors
